About

Departmental Profile: The Economics Department is one of the emerging departments of this institution. Many dedicated academicians have served in this department. Currently, a total of highly responsible four faculty members are actively engaged in carrying forward the initiative taken by the founders of this department. Hons. & Gen. courses are being offered in this department as per the syllabus of the University of Calcutta. The Department has its library along with the Central Library of the College.

Year of Establishment: 1964

History of the department: At the beginning of the College, the Economics Department also started its journey. One of the oldest departments of this institution, almost 56 years have been passed with many achievements and many to be achieved in the near future. This Department started its journey mainly to support the commerce Dept. so initially there was the only general course in Economics offered by the College. But in 2001, Hons. The course has been started and continues to offer this with full dignity.

Specialization: Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Rural Development, Human Development Index, Statistical Economics, etc.

Program outcomes: the basic knowledge of the discipline of Economics including concepts, fundamental theories, and general principles. This should also support the ability to ask pertinent questions and to obtain solutions to these questions by using qualitative and quantitative reasoning. The important

attributes of the students including appreciation of all the subjects related to Economics, and they become curious, creative, and innovative in relating the social reality with Economics. With this in mind, we aim to provide a firm foundation in every aspect of Economics. The mode of delivery should be such to impart the component of content related to Economics with clarity and convenience by developing practical, demonstrative, and mathematical skills of students.

Program Specific Outcomes: On completion of the program, the graduates will Apply knowledge and skills in the field of Economics, research, statistics, and mathematics and will be able to have employability in these areas. Ready for working in the Economic world like banking, industries, Education, etc.

Course Outcomes: For the Hons., Students should be able to use their critical thinking in the context of Economics for India & the world economy. As their course offers outstanding skill development in the area of Statistical Economics, Mathematical Economics, and econometrics as compulsory; they may be able to do further advanced studies in these fields or even the newly emerging domain called “Data-Scientist”.

For the General, students should be able to clarify the basic idea of Economics and Economy with other subjects of social science.

Learning Outcomes: Ability of Economic analysis, financial analysis, and environmental analysis of any ongoing issue. After completion of the course, they may ask questions that may be unique in context to a different area of society. As the questions are the main source of innovation. Without questions, humankind would not be able to come to this year of information & technology. Students who pass out with Economics Honours have potential careers in MBA, Civil Services, Banking Sector, Financial Analysis, Indian Economic Service, teaching, and research activities.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON THE TOPIC “IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE WEAVERS’ OF BEGAMPUR, HOOGLY”

On Thursday 31st March 2022, Department of Economics Lalbaba College has organized ONE DAY Workshop on the Topic “IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE WEAVERS’ OF BEGAMPUR, HOOGLY”. The

organizing committee consists of the following:

The workshop program has started by sharp 10:00am in the morning by welcome and garlanding to the Honorable Principal Dr. Sanjay Kumar Lalbaba College and resource person Dr. Kishor Naskar and Dr. Sourav Kumar Das. Before getting into the main session Prof. Soumik Kanti Ghosh has given introductory speech about the workshop and its importance followed by Principal Sir’s self-experienced Weavers’ cultural, traditional and economical lifestyle. Followed by short speech and beautiful song by Prof.

Krishnendu Das, HOD department of Economics, Lalbaba College and with the warm regards by the Principal the first main session has started by 11:30 am. During first session Dr. Naskar has established and introduced immensely and effectively about the formal and informal sector in an economy and its importance. He also explained the impact of COVID-19 in these sectors in comparison to the pre pandemic years. The first session continued till 1:00 pm. After having some snacks and tea the second main session began from 1:15 pm till 2:20 pm by Dr. Sourav Kumar Das. During this session Dr. Das presented the students basic ideas about data collection and its analysis. As the workshop has been linked to the field work the data collection and analysis was important for the students and keeping in mind Dr. Das has also provided students with the survey questionnaire and how to use questionnaire for the field work purpose. After completion of both the main sessions there was question- answer session for 20 minutes where both the resource person cleared all the doubts of the participants. The workshop ended by the thanks giving speech by Prof. Krishnendu Das, HOD Department of Economics, Lalbaba College at 3:00 pm.



This is to certify that these 48 students have attended and successful completed the workshop on “Impact of COVID-19 on the weavers’ of Begampur, Hooghly” organized by Department of Economics, Lalbaba College on 31st March 2022.
